Organization and Position Overview: Shirley Heinze Land Trust is a non-profit organization established in 1981 to preserve and protect the unique ecosystems throughout Northwest Indiana. It has permanently protected and manages over 2,100 acres in Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and St. Joseph Counties.

The mission of the organization is twofold: 

To protect habitats and ecosystems of Northwest Indiana through acquiring, restoring and protecting environmentally significant landscapes for present and future generations, and to inspire and educate people of all ages about the value of land conservation to protect our natural world and enrich our lives. 

The Development Director is responsible for working in partnership with the Executive Director, Development Coordinator, Board of Directors, and Fundraising Committee to further build upon the resources needed to fulfill all facets of the organization’s mission.  This new position within the organization will have a primary focus, under the supervision of the Executive Director, on the following: strengthening development and volunteer capacity; advancing the fundraising and strategic plans; broadening relationships and partnerships with individuals, foundations, and corporations; increasing organizational capacity by securing new funding sources; enhancing outreach events; maximizing donor and volunteer retention; and expanding the mission into a broader geography.

Develop and implement fundraising and donor strategies including annual and capital campaigns, grant funding, corporate and foundation support, special events, and planned giving to achieve fundraising goals in partnership with the Fundraising Committee, Board, Executive Director, Development Coordinator, and staff.

Personally engage and establish relationships with existing and new donors, volunteers, committee members, corporations, and foundations.

Implement and update the comprehensive fundraising plan in coordination with the Fundraising Committee, Board, Executive Director, and Development Coordinator.

Provide leadership, vision, and strategic thinking to generate the financial resources necessary to fulfill the current five-year strategic plan.

Bring about significant increases in annual unrestricted support.

Manage a portfolio of donors, foundations, and corporations.

Implement and nurture a new program of Giving Circles.

Research new funding sources and trends, and secure grant funding to increase operating support. 

Participate and represent the organization in regional partnerships and collaborations.

Regularly communicate with the Executive Director regarding work in progress. 

Manage and actively participate in Fundraising, Major Gift, Finance, Marketing, and Program Committees to integrate fundraising goals into every aspect of the organization, and to keep Committees apprised of development progress toward strategic plan and fundraising goals. 

Assist the Development Coordinator, Spring Benefit Committee, and Fundraising Committee with organizing and following up on fundraising and outreach events.

Staff the Executive Director as needed (with research, correspondence, scripts, call reports, follow-up actions) to facilitate his in involvement in Major Gift cultivation and solicitation.

Prepare monthly written reports and track progress of development and volunteer activities. 

Develop and propose annual fundraising budget with the Fundraising Committee.

Maintain and update grant reporting, donor communication, and volunteer engagement activities.

Assist with donor cultivation through special hikes and events.

Assist with educational and outreach events such as presentations, hikes, and field trips.

Oversee and assist with maintenance of call reports, records, and database, and maintaining Land Trust Alliance Accreditation (in progress).

Observe all employee and organizational policies. 


Demonstrated ability of achieving fundraising goals and generating new sources of income.

Experience with creating and developing relationships with a wide range of constituents. 

A team player with an understanding and interest in cultivating donors and volunteers.

Demonstrated record of success in making direct asks for support and building a strong culture of giving.

Excellent organizational, writing, speaking skills. 

High energy, enthusiasm, ability to create a positive work environment, personal integrity, and strong people skills.

A passion for land conservation.

Ability to work independently without close oversight.

Bachelor’s Degree required.  Master’s Degree preferred.

Minimum of 5 years of experience in development and land trust experience preferred.

Hiking outdoors, participating in weekend events, and a valid driver’s license will be required.
